Assumptions
In Year 13 Sport Science been able to support and challenge assumptions is a skill that is needed to justify your own work and opinions but to also raise your marks up to Merit and Excellence as it shows critical thinking.
What is an assumption?
An assumption is something that you assume (believe without proof) to be the case even without hard proof. For example people may make the assumption that because your a nerd you wear glasses even though that is not true. Or that one exercise training program is going to work for all people.
How to challenge an assumption in your work
- What is your point of view on the assumption. Either agree or disagree. Whatever you choose your opinion of the assumption is the correct one no matter what.
- Explain why you have the opinions you do about the assumption. Use research (internet articles, journal articles, magazine articles, survey results etc) to back up and make your argument stronger. If you can find other people to support your opinions then it makes your statements stronger.
- Acknowledge the good points from the opposite side of the assumption. For example: I understand that this is a good idea and can provide a good safety option for kayakers by doing ........... but .................
- What are the wider implications (effects) on society. You should be looking into commenting on this using SPEEECH. S = Society / Social, P = Political, E =Ethical, E = Economic, E = Environmental, C = Cultural and H = Historical. You don't need to address al the letters just some that are most relevant to your argument.
- Ultimately pick apart the good points from the opposite side of the assumption with more hard facts about your opinions.
